PNGDF should be sent to help out in Hides

The National, Tuesday 14th Febuary 2012

Disasters, big or small, will continue to happen if stringent controls are not put in place.
PNG has had its share in the past few weeks.
In most countries, when a disaster strikes, the mili-tary takes charge within hours but ours.
I believe the PNGDF is just as capable as our personnel are well-trained.
I was impressed when the government said it would deploy our military to the landslip site at Hides.
However, I was distressed when the local MP, Francis Potape, told EMTV on Feb 10 that he would not encourage the deployment of the PNGDF.
He preferred to let the people continue their search despite not having proper equipment.
This exercise would allow him to hand out cash to the people.
What equipment do the people have compared to the PNGDF?
Our military personnel are trained while the local people are not.
We are talking about two different things here – saving lives not money.
Does the MP care for his people?
The people are mourning and are grief-stricken.
They want to give a decent burial to their loved ones and the sooner they are recovered, the better.
From an engineer’s view, Potape has erred as it would take ages for the people to remove and dig through the debris.
