 AN addition is to be made to the first project developed by Papua New Guinea Forest Authority and Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Their PNG Resource Information Management System (PNG-RIMS), a database capacity development of forest resource monitoring for addressing climate change and sustainably management of forests, is to be improved with a second project starting later this year.
An agreement was signed by PNGFA managing director Kanawi Pouru and chief representative of JICA, Shigeru Sugiyama yesterday.
Sugiyama said the K20 million project on capacity development for utilising the PNG-RIMS was expected to be implemented from July to 2019.
He said the database developed and the capacity of the PNGFA staff enhanced in the previous project provided the platform for the new project.
The expected outcomes of the new project:

  • Data is expanded and enhanced;
  • having national and forest plans, forest management plans and improved monitoring; and,
  • Having forest information for addressing climate change.

Pouru said the project would help to produce more accurate databases and maps to be used in national discussions in forest, land use and climate change.
