PNGFA wants foreign coach

THE Papua New Guinea Football Association says it wants to bring an overseas coach to mentor the men’s national team and help raise the level of soccer in the country.
PNGFA plans to have a new coach in place later this year as they begin preparations for the start of Fifa World Cup qualifying.
PNG have not played an international match since last July’s Pacific Games where the Bob Morris-coached team were beaten on penalties in the bronze playoff against Fiji.
Morris is now in charge of Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) defending champions Lae City following the sacking of foundation coach Peter Gunemba
“What we want to try and do is bring in a high-level coach who can bring some discipline and great tactical training,” PNGFA president John Kapi Natto said.
“So that he can then mentor our coaches like Morris and others who are below in the PNG circles.
“We’ve already got a few applications that we are going to be looking at and then the committee will decide on a suitable external coach to bring in.”
PNGFA national coaching development officer Harrison Kamake will help the incoming head coach select a squad for this year’s Oceania Football Confederation Nations Cup.
Kapi Natto said the plan was to hire a coach for three months, adding that if things went well, the governing body could offer them a long-term deal or look elsewhere.
“In a couple of weeks, the names will be coming in and hopefully, the PNGFA congress will come into fruition to allow for long-term planning so that we know who our coaches, teams and management are for the next four years,” he said.
PNGFA has already received a number of coaching applications from all over the world, according to Kapi Natto.
“I think there’s a German coach, I think there’s an African coach and then we’ve got New Zealand coaches who have also sent in their CVs,” he said. “We’ve also got a Brazilian coach who has sent in his CV so we’d like to have the same calibre as our former coach (Flemming Serritslev who) is now with the Fiji national team.”

  • These people are NOT SOCIAL DISTANCING! WHAT IS HAPPENING LIFE FIRST OR SPORTS FIRST?

  • PUT SPORTS ASIDE! HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY FOR AN INTERNATIONAL COACH WHEN WE NEED MONEY TO COMBAT THE PANDEMIC? SPORTS IS A LIABILITY TO THE COUNTRY. PUT IT AWAY.
