PNGRFL introduces video-review system

Sports

THE Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) has introduced a video-review system to help referees make correct calls in the Digicel Cup.
But the system, which was launched in round four over the weekend, will only be trialed in Port Moresby this year before being used in other venues from next season.
The system proved crucial when Mt Hagen Eagles’ Moses Tali crossed over on the left edge three minutes from fulltime, with the Port Moresby Vipers leading 16-10.
However, a review of the try showed that the winger had lost possession of the ball and never grounded it in the Vipers’ in-goal area.
A correct call was then made with “no try” shown on the stadium’s big screen.
Vipers coach Leonard Tarum hailed PNGNRLC for introducing the system.
“I think it’s about time and kudos to the Digicel Cup organisers for introducing the system,” he said.
“The system will help us avoid controversy and complaints as it will assist referees in making calls.”
