Poaching sees five deported
FIVE Vietnamese were deported by the Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA) after they were found working in contravention of their visa conditions in Port Moresby this week.
According to a statement issued by ICA, the foreigners were found illegally poaching and smuggling sea cucumbers which are protected species of commercial significance in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Deputy chief migration officer Stanis Hulahau said the foreigners thought they could get away with breaking the country’s law.
“We are here to protect PNG and its economy from being taken away by outsiders,” Hulahau said.
They were detained at the newly-opened Bomana Immigration Centre (BIC) prior to deportation.
