Pokanis: Number of convicts increasing
CORRECTIONAL Service (CS) Commissioner Stephen Pokanis says PNG has 5,200 prisoners but the number is increasing every day.
He said Correctional staff totalled 1,487 and the ratio of prisoners-detainees was 1:10 for both low and high-risk prisoners.
“International standard of officers to prisoners is 1:3 for low-risk convicted prisoners and 2:1 for high-risk convicted and remand prisoners.
About 900 CS officers are involved in custodial duties in looking after the prisoners. About 200 CS officers are working at the headquarters and the training college.”
Pokanis said CS was building its main power over the next four years to 2,000 and above.
He said it would be improved.

Government needs to look further in to that problem and employ more CS in each province to look after their province. Many times recruitment take place only in Moresby and its not fair. How about other provinces, maybe there must be shortage of students or no prison there …please be fair
