PORT Moresby police are discussing with City Hall the installation of closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) around the city to monitor criminal activities.
Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou said he had already talked to a senior manager and hoped to meet City Manager Bernard Kipit this week.
N’Dranou has also asked the information communication technology department at police headquarters to provide the facilities.
“The problem is that the CCTVs currently installed are only in Apec areas (and routes). Therefore, hot spots for criminal activities such as Gordon, for example, are not covered,” he said.
“I hope to work with the National Capital District Commission to install CCTVs across the city to help police monitor law and order issues.”
N’Dranou said City Hall was interested in the proposal.
“The thing is we do not have the funding, the manpower or the resources to monitor the whole city 24 hours a day,” he said.
“So if we have CCTVs and a control centre, we can easily watch over the city and (quickly) respond to reports.” N’Dranou also called on city residents to help those in trouble.
“When you see a woman being harassed or forced into a vehicle, for example, don’t just ignore it. Do something about it. Help her because crime will continue if you and I do nothing.”
