A MAN who allegedly threatened a family with a home-made gun to steal their vehicle in Port Moresby on Saturday was arrested by police.
Police say the man was part of a gang of four when he was arrested.
“Members of NCD police were conducting routine foot patrols at 6-Mile at around 8.45am today (Saturday) when they inadvertently stumbled across a robbery,” police said in a statement.
“A gang of four men were in the process of holding up a family in a car at the 6-Mile shopping centre when the policemen walked right into this crime incident.
“Three of the suspects fled the scene while a fourth suspect was apprehended.
“The suspect was then taken to the 6-Mile Police Station and handed over to the minor crimes unit.”
Police said random foot patrols in the city would continue to clamp down on criminal activities.

  • Random foot patrols are not enough. Full time police patrols are needed at crime hotspots around the city like major bus stops and markets. The city is currently descending into chaos with more and more crime reports every day – unemployed young men and boys living in settlements are robbing and terrorising Port Moresby residents especially women and school children as they move around the city. If there are not enough regular police to keep public places safe then private security companies must be engaged and their officers given special training and reserve police powers to detain suspects. Then it will only be a matter of money but I am sure city residents would prefer their taxes be spent on crime prevention like this.
