Police ask villagers to help find and capture suspects

POLICE are calling on Baruni villagers to help them identify and arrest those involved in the hijacking of vehicles along the Gerehu-Baruni road.
Inspector Max Dogme said the villagers were not cooperating.
“Village committee (members) are trying to identify the suspects in the village but the villagers themselves are not helping,” Dogme said.
“The suspects are still at large.”
Police believe that a gang of more than seven men have been involved in stopping motorists at the roundabout to the Red Sea Housing Company, the road to the LNG site and Downtown.
They target mostly female drives, and take their money and other valuable properties.
He said police recovered a vehicle which was taken by force from a female driver of Koukpu village at the foot of the mountain on Baruni road.
“The suspects have already been identified by the villagers. Some of them are their relatives. They helped us to arrest them,” he said.
Assistant Police Commissioner Donald Yamasombi, who is in charge of the National Capital District and Central, said he was aware of the increase in car thefts in Port Moresby.
