Police asked to provide vehicle for prisoners

Waigani Committal Court magistrate Cosmas Bidar has asked police to provide a vehicle to help transport prisoners to court after the assigned vehicle broke down several times.
“I don’t see any reason why we don’t have a vehicle to bring the prisoners down from Bomana (jail). There are a lot of police vehicles roaming around,” he said.
“Why can’t they substitute one since the other is always down?”
Bidar was speaking when eight defendants, who are in custody and supposed to appear in court yesterday, were not brought in as there were no vehicles to transport them.
“This matter has to be raised so that something is done about it,” he said.
“We cannot continue to adjourn cases just because there is no vehicle.” According to some of the police prosecutors, there was only one vehicle assigned to transport prisoners to court.
There were also instances when there was no fuel for the vehicle and prisoners were not brought to court.
This delayed the court processes and added to the huge pile of cases building up as new cases came in.
