The National Airports Corporation has launched a new programme to ensure that the safety and security of the travelling public is safe.
National Airports Corporation Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Richard Yopo said the Airport Lukaut Programme aimed to improve the security and safety at the airport would see more police presence in the area.
He said this would also include police patrols in and around the airport premises.
He said the Lukaut programme also urges the public to see, hear and report any suspicious activities around the airport.
“Under section 58 of the Civil Aviation Act, the police is required to assist the airport security in ensuring the safety of the public thus it is only fitting to have this new program to promote safety not only in security designated areas,”
He said the toll free number to call is 324 4818 and urged the public to report any suspicious activities if they see and hear of it.
“The Lukaut program will also include random checks on vehicles at the car park and defective cabs would ease operations and it is to make public transportation safe.”
He said the Lukaut program was part of NAC’s security strategy in preparation towards the 2018 Asia Pacific Economic Corporation Summit. “The Airport Lukaut program is a joint initiative between the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary and the National Airports Corporation.
“The Australian Federal Police PNG-Australian Policing Partnership has assisted through the development and facilitation of a Behavioural Assessment and Security
Intelligence Course.
“When combined with the Lukaut programme will provide enhanced security capabilities to the
Aviation Security area, police and stakeholders in the airports,” Yopo said.
The course was devised with the assistance of the University of Papua New Guinea – Anthropology and Sociology Department.
“The course saw 38 people across the aviation environment successfully complete the course with further courses to be delivered in 2018 in the lead up to Asia Pacific Economic Corporation Summit,” he said.
