Police boss bans street markets

JIWAKA acting police commander Horim Piamia has removed all street markets at Banz in a move to restore order.
Police shut down street sales in Banz on Jan 1, and the same will happen in Kudjip and Minj.
Street markets make the problems of homebrew and drug abuse worse, Piamia said.
“Street sellers don’t pay taxes, electricity and water bills to the government. They are the reason why people don’t buy goods from the stores,” he said.
“They don’t care about people’s health. People must sell food in a proper way.
“There must be some form of control in the way people do things in our towns.
“We will try and discuss ways in which we rearrange our market structures to protect our regulated businesses.
“People must buy and sell at the proper places.
“Selling betel nuts and cooked food in the open is unhealthy. People are no longer buying things from the store and this discourages regulated business activities.”
