BULOLO police lack the capacity to enforce law and order and restore peace in the mining town, a senior police officer says.

Outgoing Bulolo police station commander Senior Inspector Timothy Pomoso was speaking to pastors and leaders at a swearing-in ceremony at the Amalgamated Local Church in Bulolo last Friday.

“We lack the manpower and resources to enforce law and order in Bulolo,” he said.

“The Government should look into empowering the police with adequate manpower and funding to enable us to perform our duties,” Pomoso said.

“I have been asking for fuel and other assistance from companies and business houses to maintain our fleet of vehicles in the past two years. We cannot allow that trend to continue as we are a Government organisation and need to function on our own.”

He will be posted to Lae as chief of operations.

Pomoso said the manpower ceiling of 30 officers in Bulolo should be increased to 50.

He said Bulolo police needed eight new vehicles for sections such as the criminal investigation department, traffic, public safety and prosecution to help officers carry out their duties.
