Police charge accused imposter
A MAN, 27, was arrested in Ramu for allegedly pretending to be a PNG Defence Force recruiting officer based out of Moem Barracks in Wewak.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said according to Ramu police, the Gaun villager in Tewai-Siassi, Morobe, last Monday went to Markham and told youths to pay K300 to register and K200 to enrol.
He said two boys from Ragiampun village, Markam, gave him K300 to print an acceptance letter and an application form.
Supt Rubiang said the complainant later found that there was no signature from the defence force commander or stamp.
He said the youths then reported the matter to police at Ramu.
The man was arrested and charged with stealing by false pretence and locked up.
“I want to inform the public that there are many impersonators around to trick people to obtain money from them,” Supt Rubiang said.
“We all should be careful when applying for a job or a school, we should make sure that the application is from a genuine institution on the letter head.”
