A POLICE investigation has concluded that a cheque for K500,000 picked up by a ministerial staffer showed no impropriety or false pretence.

Dei MP Wesley Nukundi alleged a fortnight ago that a cheque for the amount had been picked up by a Thomas Nori of the Works Ministry under false pretences and alleged it had been deposited in the bank account of a Mt Hagen based law firm.

The police report said formal statements were obtained from Finance Department and from Nori and investigators concluded that the cheque had indeed been picked up by Nori but that it had never been deposited in any account and that the cheque was not picked up under any false pretence.

A report to NCD metropolitan superintendent Andy Bawa concluded: “There was no fraudulent means involved in processing of the cheque under inquiry but was committed to Dei district treasury.”
