POLICE in Manus have denied reports that asylum seekers at their new accommodation were being threatened by local people.
ABC reported yesterday that locals were threatening the asylum seekers after they moved into the three new accommodation sites in Lorengau town.
Provincial police commander Chief Inspector David Yapu said the report was not correct.
“No, this is not true and the asylum seekers feel comfortable with their resettlement at the three new accommodation sites,” Yapu said.
He said police were patrolling the areas from time to time to ensure the safety and security of the refugees.
“I can say there has been no report of threatening behaviour of locals and no such report has been lodged either by security or refugees at the refugee camps at the Lorengau Police Station of locals threatening,” he said.
