GULF provincial police commander Lincoln Gerari is concerned about the reported assault of a couple by police officers on duty.

He said the wife was seeking police assistance in a domestic violence case when she was reportedly abused by the two police officers on duty last Friday.

He is investigating whether the policemen were under the influence of alcohol.

The officers told the woman to go and sort out the problem with her husband.

He said the officers later went to the couple’s home and argued with the husband before assaulting him.

Gerari is again warning police officer to exercise professionalism and proper conduct at all times in the execution of their duties.

He will submit a report to the internal affairs division for an investigation into the incident.

Gerari was on duty travel when the incident occurred, he said.

A resident who wish not to be named for safety reasons said a few officers were tarnishing the image of the police force.

He suggests to the provincial police commander to transfer rogue policemen or take disciplinary actions against them quickly.

“We don’t need ill mannered police officers in Kerema or in PNG for that matter,” he said.

“There are decent officers out there and we need them.”
