POLICE on Manus are conducting a two-week awareness programme in schools in light of the high rate of sexual offences committed by students.

Manus provincial police commander Alex N’drasal said they

had noted an increase in the

number of sex offences committed by students in the past four

months.

The school awareness started this week in collaboration with mobile squad units and the community police, he said.

N’drasa blamed the criminal activities on the rapid development currently experienced in the province.

He pointed to the increase use of mobile phones by students as a contributing factor to the sexual offences.

“They use it to communicate for this purpose,” he said.

“The awareness will bring to their attention this issue.

“The target is primary, high and secondary school students.”

N’drasa said police, with the

assistance of police mobile squad units, are setting roadblocks around the province to ensure traffic safety and apprehend traffic offenders in the province.
