CHIMBU police have gone out to all corners of the province on an election awareness drive in partnership with the Electoral Commission.

Provincial police commander Supt Albert Beli last week said the awareness followed a meeting between the two organisations in Kundiawa.

Beli said all the six districts of the province were visited.

He said topics such as early campaigns, bribery, election violence, double-voting, underage voting, alcohol consumption, possession of illegal firearms and other issues were highlighted during the awareness.

“We have carried out the awareness in the hope of making the province a peaceful place during the 2017 election. This is part of our long term strategies to bring peace to the province to minimise illegal activities during elections,” Beli said.

“We are not trying to discourage anyone from contesting or voting.

“But we want to ensure the election is conducted properly in the province next year.”

The police commander urged community leaders and members of the public to cooperate with the awareness team.

Beli said so far the move has received positive feedback from members of the community.

The people admitted that problems associated with election were rife in the past.
