POLICE and Correctional Service (CS) officers in Southern Highlands have joined forces to hunt for the remaining six escapees from Buebi jail in Mendi.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Martin Lakari said the joint operation started on Monday after 13 remandees escaped.
He said six escapees were still on the run and that was a risk for business houses and the public.
He warned that they were dangerous as they were detained for alleged murder and other serious crimes.
Chief Supt Lakari said to hunt such people down was a task that needed everyone’s effort and yet no one had turned up with any information on the fugitives.
“Together, we can work towards getting our province in order and maintain a strong tie to deal with law and order issues affecting us,” he said.
“These escapees are termed as very dangerous and they will have no freedom to move around and if they do, they will try to disturb a peaceful community.”
Chief Supt Lakari said the joint operation was ensuring that they would not have any escape routes to get away.
“We will get them and send them back to jail and the public is also welcome to relay important information of their whereabouts,” he said.
Chief Supt Lakari said if the escapees were on the lose, then people might expect another murder or armed hold-up.
“This is why they have to return to the jail,” he said.
“Most of the remandees are from Hela and Southern Highlands and can cause serious destructions at any time.”
