THE Police Department has started updating data so its pensioners are eligible for monthly payouts, the police media unit said.
A statement from the unit said updating began yesterday at headquarters in Konedobu.
Officer-in-charge (pension) Baddick Bassai said more than 100 pensioners from Central turned up at 8am yesterday to submit their pension book.
He said that weak and old people using walking sticks struggled to the pension office to ensure their names were recorded so they could collect pensions after having proudly served the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.
He said that in the Mamose and New Guinea Islands region at least 37 pensioners died last year.
“This information was not relayed to the provincial police office or the police deadquarters so adjustments could be made to pay eligible recipients,” he said.
Bassai said data update was being planned for other provinces, depending on funding.
“We are concerned when relatives of dead pensioners collect what is not rightfully his entitlement and that is a criminal offence,” he said.
“There are cases of pensioners who have died but have not received their pension entitlements and that will be sorted out also.”
