PARENTS in Port Moresby have been warned not to leave their children unattended or with unreliable relatives when leaving home.
National Capital District police operations commander Supt Perou N’Dranou said rape cases against minors dealt with by the police recently had shown that people close to the victims were the ones who often committed such crimes.
“This is a warning to all parents not to leave their children unattended with people either close to them or people they do not know,” N’Dranou said.
N’Dranou said parents should take heed of the warning and take necessary action when leaving children home.
One case the police officer pointed out was a rape  involving a step-father sexually penetrating his daughter at their home on the outskirts of Port Moresby.
The incident was reported to police last week after the community apprehended the suspect and took him to Gordon’s Police Station.
N’Dranou said the step-father had lured the girl into the nearby bushes on the pretext that there were betel nuts next to their house.
N’Dranou said the girl was threatened at knife point by the accused and was sexually penetrated.
He said the accused was caught during the act and was immediately brought to the Gordon’s Police Station where he was locked up.
Daily crimes featuring in the nation’s capital was at steady level, he said..
N’Dranou said car thefts, breaking and entering and armed robberies were  at a steady level.
He said the fight against crime required the support of the community.
