ABOUT 18 students from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Arob) attending a community college on Karkar Island were taken to Madang town yesterday.
According to Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang, the directive to ensure the students’ safety stemmed from their parents’ concerns.
Supt Rubiang and his team arrived at the Kinim Station to help facilitate the students’ travel home. He said police understood there was some mistreatment of students by admistration.
After speaking with the 18, Supt Rubiang said: “The students from Arob wanted to return home as their parents are concerned if they remained on the island.
“The parents don’t want their children to have any issue against the school administration.”
Supt Rubiang and his policemen and the students left the island by boat and arrived at Kubugam on the mainland.
They then travelled by road to Madang town.
“(As) per an instruction, we will get the students out of the island and to Madang town before anything arises,” Supt Rubiang said.
“Eighteen students are ready for extraction, 16 females and two males, while four still remain in the school campus undecided.”
Supt Rubiang thanked the churches on the island who helped accommodate the students.
