POLICE accommodation at Wau town in Bulolo, Morobe are old and unhealthy for human habitation, says Morobe police commander Supt Alex N’Drasal.
He said it was the reason not too many police officers wanted to be posted there.
“Currently there are (only 12) policemen in Wau making it easy for people to break the law,” Supt N’Drasal said.
He said Wau should have 40 policemen.
There is an increase in drug-related and alcohol-abuse cases.
The number of illegal alluvial miners is also increasing.
Supt N’drasal said the killing of a person there last month was linked to illegal alluvial mining.
“We have seen ethnic clashes and when police tried to intervene, they were overpowered,” he said.
He plans to beef up police manpower in the district but the problem is accommodation and mobility.
Meanwhile, Supt N’drasal said police investigation into the ethnic clash between the Biangai and the Warai people last month was continuing.
