A CHINESE man has been arrested and charged by joint security forces with allegedly being in possession of illegal firearms, ammunition and contraband.

The 34-year-old from Fujian province is a sales and marketing manager of a store in Porgera.

He was apprehended with a local partner after joint forces conducted the raid at Kumbipara on Tuesday.

They confiscated three firearms and shotgun bullets and contraband items which included imported beer and liquor from his home.

Chief Supt Norman Kambo is concerned about foreigners doing business in PNG and not respecting the country’s laws and engaging in illegal activities.

“We shall check his passport, employment visa and also liaise with our transnational crime unit to investigate this suspect,” he said

The local woman was charged with obstructing police while carrying out their duty.  The two suspects were locked at the Paiam police cell and later released on bail.

Though the suspect had a firearm licence for two guns, he allegedly did not inform the security forces or produced them earlier.

It was only after the guns were discovered hidden in a concealed cabinet under a table that he produced his licence, police claimed.

The suspect’s passport and firearm licences were taken by police.
