OFFICERS at the Badili police station have been given a new 10-seater vehicle by local MP Dame Carol Kidu yesterday.
The vehicle was bought by Dame Carol under the joint district planning and budget priorities committee for K121,000 last week.
Onibu Mari, deputy chairman of the Moresby South budgetary committee, said they had over the years realised there was a huge need to fight law and order problems in the area as it had affected development
and service delivery.
“Law and order is a big problem in the electorate. We see that police here have been doing a great job therefore we came in to assist,” Mari said.
He said the committee had given K10,000 last week to the Badili police for Christmas and New Year operations.
“The JDP&BPC has built a police post for Vabukori villagers at a cost of K200,000 and have fenced this police station (Badili) at a cost of
 K110,000,” Mari said.
He said the aim was to boost police morale and reduce crime in the area.
Police station commander Bill Warake thanked Dame Carol and her JDP&BPC for recognising the hard work of his men, saying the vehicle would be used for police work only.
“I have a zero tolerance policy on alcohol consumption while using a police vehicle therefore I expect my men to use this vehicle for police purposes only,” he said.
Warake said the vehicle was not only for the police officers but belonged to the 75,000-plus people of the electorate.
Acting NCD metropolitan commander Supt Norman Kambo said policing was a social service and the local MP should respect that.
He said the vehicle would enhance mobility and improve police response time to complaints.
