SECURITY in Port Moresby will be beefed up tomorrow as the governor-general’s invitation to form a new government goes out to Peter O’Neill’s PNC Party-led coalition and the ninth parliament prepares to appoint its speaker.
National Capital District police operations Supt Andy Bawa said yesterday police would be deployed in full force within the vicinity of the Parliament and the roundabout near the National Archives as the events unfolded inside.
Members of O’Neill’s coalition, who have been in camp in Alotau, would be flying into the capital today.
Supt Bawa said no parade would be held but the entire police manpower within NCD and a section of the mobile squad members based at the McGregor police barracks would be engaged.
“Traffic will also be tight in the adjacent driveways leading to Parliament,” he said.
Bawa said police intelligence had revealed no indications of any threat but said police were prepared for the unexpected.
“People who are thinking of causing trouble must think twice,” he said.
“Police will not allow any trouble or protest on the ground.”
