EFFORTS by youths to control the use of marijuana and homebrew in Minj, Jiwaka, Western Highlands is being lauded by police.
Minj police station commander Insp Horim Piamia said  Minj was infamous for homebrew production and the planting, selling and smoking of marijuana.
But this was changing, he said, with law and order problems also being brought under control.
He said this was good news for the communities.
He said this was a big change and urged people still engaging in bad habits to quit.
Piamia said to change Minj and take it back to its glory days, they must work together.
More than 90 drug addicts recently pledged to give up marijuana at a small
ceremony in Minj.
He said when the people took initiatives to help themselves, their local MP must assist them.
He challenged local MP and Health and HIV/AIDS Minister Jamie Maxtone-Graham to assist youths who were trying to help themselves.
Meanwhile, Piamia urged people in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them as police had their names.
