Police investigate cell block escape
The National, Tuesday 1st of April, 2014
POLICE Commissioner Toami Kulunga (pictured) wants an investigation into the recent escape of detainees from the Madang police station cells.
He has directed police in Mt Hagen to investigate the shooting involving some officers.
“I want immediate investigations into both accidents and appropriate actions taken,” he said.
“Escape from police cells or custody nationwide continues to be a major embarrassment for the constabulary. If it is negligence on our part then appropriate action will be taken not only on duty officers but their supervisors as well.
“If the escape is due to poor lock-up facilities, then urgent maintenance work is needed to be carried out to prevent such escapes from occurring again.”
Kulunga said a media report on police shooting in Mt Hagen was disturbing.
“If the media report is true then the policemen involved will be severely dealt with,” he said.
