POLICE are keeping a heavy presence in the troubled Walya area of Wapenamanda, Enga, after three people were killed in a “shooting spree” on Nov 6, provincial police commander, Martin Lakari says.
The shooting is related to an on-going tribal fight between two factions of the Yoponda tribe living in the Manda Valley.
The fighting was over the administration of a government checkpoint between the Enga-Western Highlands border.
The checkpoint was set up to search people transporting weapons, alcohol, drugs and other illicit substances into the province.
Chief Supt Lakari said armed men entered the village and shot three men and injured others with high-powered firearms before fleeing.
Lakari said he had dispatched two task force units from Wabag comprising of 20 men to guard the area until peace was restored.
