POLICE are investigating the allegations of torching of houses and rapes that are related to the local level government (LLG) elections violence in Kudjip, Jiwaka, last month.
Asst Comm Eastern End Nema Mondiai said the allegations were posted on social media and “we need to check the authenticity of the allegations”.
“Police have approached the two groups in Kudjip and they agreed to resolve the matter before court,” he said.
Mondiai said a team of investigators had started their probe and “we appeal to eye witnesses and victims to cooperate with the police by giving information”.
Minz police station commander Insp Michael Kapal said Jiwaka police would also help in the investigations.
“We are unable to confirm or deny at the moment that 16 houses were burnt and 12 women and girls were raped.
“We need to investigate and verify the facts and figures,” Mondiai said.
He said information from social media was not always accurate.
