THE road and street maintenance project being carried out in and around the central business district of Lae’s top town area, is good news for residents but has its hurdles as well.
Traffic jams and pedestrian conjestion has been the norms in recent days and weeks.
The junctions of Eighth and Ninth streets with Central Avenue, which were the main bus stops and pick-up points were closed to traffic due to the road maintenance.
The Seventh Street and Central Avenue junction in front of Wan Jin Wah Trading is now the central points for drop-off and pick-up for the bus routes to and from the main market, Angau Memorial Hospital, Snack Bar, China town, Eriku, Kamkumung, Hunter and back road to Bumayong.
It is risky when men, women and children try to cross the road that is jammed with buses and the flowing traffic.
However, it was a welcoming sight last Friday afternoon when policemen and women were out on the streets controlling traffic and pedestrian at the crossings as well.
City residents are calling the police hierarchy in Lae to let that continue.
According to the road works contractors, Shorncliffe and Cameron Constructions, this trend will go on for a few more months.
