Police meets marred by deaths

NEWLY-appointed Jiwaka police commander Senior Inspector Kauga Maragil and director of prosecution Jimmy Onopia collapsed and died at two different police workshops a week apart in Port Moresby.
Maragil, who attended the Police Commissioner’s Conference in Port Moresby, collapsed at around 8am last Friday (May 24) at Hideaway Hotel while attending the workshop and was rushed by his colleagues to Pacific International Hospital (PIH).
Police Commissioner Gari Baki said during the conference that Maragil was stabilised in the vehicle before reaching PIH but died during his treatment that afternoon.
Onopia, who attended the Prosecution Strategic Direction Conference workshop at Gateway Hotel, collapsed on Friday (May 17) and was rushed to Pacific International Hospital (PIH) but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies of the officers are yet to be sent to their home provinces.
