Police nab 9 for unlawful entry
POLICE have arrested and charged nine men who were caught trespassing the Nagada eviction site in Madang last week.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said police providing security at the site found the suspects walking towards portion 70 under the influence of liquor.
“The suspects, former residents of the site, had been evicted,” he said.
“Policemen in a patrol car were alerted of the drunkards and rushed to the site to nab the suspects.
“They were identified as settlers who formerly stayed in portion 68.
“I want to warn other settlers residing in the location to leave the area because the machine will soon arrive, so it is best you leave early.
“Police are acting on court orders and no one must issue threats to policemen on duty at the site.”
Supt Rubiang called on land owners of the neighbouring villagers not to accommodate people who had been evicted from the site because they could cause problems in the community.
He said police would arrest those harbouring the settlers when complaints were lodged.
Supt Rubiang said the eviction was ongoing with police presence to ensure law and order.
He also advised parents to provide bus fares for their children to travel and not allow them walk through the eviction site because “anything can happen”.
“We must think ahead and not depend on police all the time,” he said.
“Take precautions to avoid unforeseen problems.”
