POLICE in Port Moresby need around K55 million annually for their operations, according to Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou, pictured.
He said they needed K54,750,000 annually but were receiving much less.
“For one day alone, we need about K150,000 for the city’s nine police stations. Currently we are facing fuel problems which has been an ongoing issue,” he said.
N’dranou said police vehicles were refuelled only three times a week and most times they could not be used.
“So before you complain about police officers not doing their job, please understand that we do not have the funding, the manpower or the resources to carry out our duties fully,” he said.
N’dranou said they were doing what they could with the little they had to ensure there was peace in the community and law and order issues were addressed.
“Our main duty is to ensure public safety so that is what we will be concentrating on,” he said. “We are cutting down on providing police escorts and towing vehicles. I call on the public to please work with us and help us protect our city.”
