Police note rise in sexual abuse
SEXUAL crime is on the rise in the National Capital District, Metropolitan Supt Perou N’dranou lamented.
“Last month, 47 cases of sexual crime were reported in NCD and it continues to rise. Now, about 13 cases are reported daily but the there could be many cases that had gone unreported,” he added.
N’dranou urged parents and the public to unite and help check the rising trend of sexual crimes.
“We must not allow such crimes to continue unabated until it becomes an acceptable social norm with no public concern whatsoever,” he said.
“Communities and social organisations must rise and help address this serious problem.”
On another matter, N’dranou said the assault and robbery of a security guard from Easter Highland’s Marawaka in Erima had sparked a tribal war between Eastern and Southern Highlanders in Port Moresby on Thursday.
He said the security guard was dropped off under the Erima flyover at about 5am to start work when four men attacked and robbed him.
N’dranou said the security guard was stabbed but he managed to flee and alerted his relatives and friends who then retaliated.
The tribal conflict affected the travelling public and the flow of traffic into the city.
N’dranou said police intervened and eventually dispersed the two parties from the main highway into the settlement at the back of the fly over.
He said police managed to calm the situation and got both sides to sit down for a dialogue.
However, the fight erupted on Friday and spilled to the 8-Mile.
The situation is under control after police was stationed there to maintain public order.
