A police officer and two others have been arrested and charged over illegal use of firearms along the Magi Highway in Central, police said.

Central provincial police commander Liamo Asi said the officer attached to McGregor Mobile Squad and two civilians were arrested for allegedly discharging firearms indiscriminately along Magi Highway on Sunday.

“This action was very serious as people’s lives were put at risk along the highway. They were reported to be drunk and discharged firearms without any valid reason,” Asi told The National.

The three men were arrested and charged with one count of being in possession of unlicensed firearms and one count of unlawful discharging of a firearm.

Meanwhile, 14 suspects were arrested during a special police operation known as Operation Kairiku Tauna Namona 2015, which was conducted a week ago.
