Police officer charged with inducement
A RESERVE police officer appeared before the Waigani Committal Court yesterday on a charge of inducement.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar, when reading out the charges to Paul Kauri, 27, from Lese, Malalaua in Gulf, said: “Kauri was alleged to have stopped a car driven by Daniel Malaga at a roadblock along the Hiritano Highway and asked him for K50, and to use his car, and also to buy his (Kauri’s) food.”
Kauri is based at the Gordon police station.
“The crime you committed was inducement,” Magistrate Bidar said.
“The victim was also a reserve police officer, and he was waiting for you to show him some favour so he would not charge you for anything regarding traffic rules.”
He said under inducement, Kauri did what he did so that Malaga could offer him incentives and let him go.
“At the time, other police officers saw you take K50 from Malaga.
“This is a fresh case, and this is your first appearance.”
Magistrate Bidar granted Kauri K500 bail and ordered that he remain in Port Moresby until his case ended.
He should also showed up every two weeks at the Waigani district court to sign his name off to confirm his presence.
The case was adjourned to July 9 for police to gather more information.
