PEOPLE should not consume alcohol while travelling at sea, a police officer has warned.
Morobe provincial police commander Chief Supt KaigloAmbane issued the warning yesterday following a tragic dinghy accident at sea that killed a teenager under the influence of liquor on May 7 this month.
The victim identified as 19-year-old Charles Kipas, was with three others who were travelling from Gagidu in Finschhafen to Tamigidu in Nawaeb,Morobe, when he fell off the speeding dinghy after losing his balance.
The incident happened between 1pm and 2pm between Uligidu and Tamigidu.
Police said the deceased and his accomplices were drinking alcohol during the trip.
Ambane said the deceased fell into the sea and could not stay afloat because he was intoxicated.
“We have arrested the skipper of the dinghy and the other two passengers for manslaughter,” Ambane said.
“It is the matter for the court to decide whether they are guilty.”
Police said the men were detained at the Buimo Jail awaiting court appearance.
Ambane urged people who plan on travelling not to consume alcohol at sea.
“Lives can be put at risk by people who are drinking and travelling on dinghies,” Ambane said.
“Be careful and put safety gears on before going out to sea.”
