Police officers arrested over man’s death

TWO police officers have been arrested and detained in custody over the death of a man in the early hours of Saturday.

National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Benjamin Turi said the two officers were arrested on Sunday and taken to the Boroko police station.

The 32-old-man from Chimbu was allegedly attacked between 4am and 4.30am was he came out of a party at the Sports Inn in Port Moresby.

According to a witness, the man was attacked outside the Sports Inn gate.

“We walked out of the club after finishing our beer. Party had ended but everyone was still inside. He came out first and was at the gate,” he said.

“The policeman walked over and punched him from the back. He fell to the ground. Then he stepped on his head about three times. After that he used a spanner to hit his head.”

The man’s friends took him to hospital after they had questioned the officers over the attack. He was confirmed dead on arrival.

It is understood that the man was an employee of a security company and was based at the Kwikila station in Central. 

He was visiting his family in Port Moresby.
