Police ordered to arrest business owners with unsafe vehicles

MT HAGEN District Court has ordered police to arrest business owners who put unroadworthy vehicles on roads.
Magistrate Lydia Karre gave the order on Friday when she found a security guard, identified by only his first name Kevin, guilty of driving an unregistered and uninsured security company vehicle which was involved in a fatal accident and injured a child in Hagen city about two weeks ago.
The court found that the security company vehicle owned by a Western Highlander and based in Hagen city, did not have a safety sticker, registration or insurance, and was driven by an inexperienced driver.
The court found that the driver got his licence three months ago and he was allowed to drive in an unroadworthy vehicle. It found the driver guilty of the four charges and imposed a K1000 fine for all charges.
The court imposed K100 fine for no safety sticker and K300 each for no registration, no insurance, and careless driving causing accident.
The court also imposed a three-month jail term on each charge which the driver would serve concurrently if he failed to pay the K1000 fine.
Karre told the traffic prosecutor that the company owner and management failed to meet traffic rules and regulation before allowing their guard to drive around in an unroadworthy vehicle that was involved in an accident.
“Next time, if you come across unroadworthy company vehicles involved in an accident, just arrest the owner of the company and lock them behind bars.”
