POLICE investigations into the deaths of three people following a fatal road accident last Friday along the Sepik Highway are continuing.

East Sepik provincial police commander Chief Insp Peter Philip confirmed that three people had died and 10 were in critical condition at the Boram Hospital in Wewak.

“A route 3/5 PMV travelling to Wewak from Angoram district headed straight over a cliff,” Philip said.

According to the hospital’s chief executive officer Mark Mauludu, one of the passengers admitted sustained a fractured jaw.

Mauludu said the driver lost control of the vehicle as he was allegedly under the influence of liquor. “The PMV went down 30 meters instantly killing three people and hospitalising 10 others,” he said.

Philip added that the driver and crew fled the scene and were still at large. He urged them to surrender to the police.

He appealed to drivers of PMVs to be mindful when passengers are on board.

“All drivers should avoid consuming alcohol when travelling on the highway, even when driving. There are traffic rules in place and if you are caught, you will be dealt with accordingly,” Philip said.

“And to passengers please if you see that the driver is drunk, don’t risk your life by getting on.”
