A man was wounded allegedly by police after a group of drunk youths tried to set up a roadblock.
Provincial police commander Senior Inspector Ewai Segi told The National that a police unit had been conducting an operation into a case in the province and were headed to Eroro, Oro Bay.
“They came across a mob of youths from nearby villages who were drunk from homebrew and who had blocked the road,” he said.
“The driver of the police vehicle swerved around road block to avoid a collision and almost went off the road. Other youths flocked onto the roadside and in due process, police fired a few warning shots towards the youths who were fleeing after the guns shots when they realised that it was a police patrol unit.”
Segi said when the patrol returned after picking up the suspects of their operation, a group of youths and people had set up a road block with rocks, old tyres and debris and the officers had to call for called for assistance to clear the road to allow traffic flow.
“I got the local task force and highway patrol units and headed to the scene,” he said. “We spoke with the village leaders and negotiated for the road to be cleared.”
