POLICE yesterday raided illegal shacks built along the drainage reserves in Port Moresby to be used by sex workers and drug dealers, as city authorities drive out squatters occupying public properties.
Gordon police station commander Inspector Mark Mosinakavi said the shacks were being used for sex and drug activities.
“When a woman brings a man, the shack owner rents out the room. And when they are done they pay the owner,” he said.
“Marijuana is brought in by air and sea and once it reaches Port Moresby, it is repackaged in these shacks and sold under the Kumul flyover (in Erima).
“Alcohol parties are held in the area. When high on drugs and alcohol, they (criminals) harass drivers and females around Erima and Gordon. We have removed them eight times already. This is the ninth time we are removing them. They do not listen.”
He said police dealt with around 15 cases each week in the Gordon and Erima suburbs.
“We have torn down 10 hauswin (shacks) and remove families squatting there.”
NCD Governor Powes Parkop told The National that temporary shelters of any kind built along the drainage reserves would not be tolerated.
He said city workers would demolish these illegal shelters around the city.
Parkop said the removal of such shelters should serve as a warning to people to stop building them in public properties.
“They are not allowed and we won’t tolerate them any more under any circumstances,” he said.
“This should serve as a warning to people seeking to build similar huts or homes along drainage reserves.
“We are starting to clamp down on illegal structures on drainage and public reserves. Those living in similar reserves especially drainage reserves must leave now.”

  • This the right time to re-visit the vagrancy act now before its too late for every cities in the country

  • Nice one, do the same illegal settlers as well, squaring on private, government and customary land

  • You have started well.. Can the Boroko police station commander remove the squatters who sleep opposite the Boroko betting shop.

  • This squatters and settlers are popping up every where in the city of POM and in other provinces as well. They are taking over areas that are not reserved for housing, prime real estate areas, government land, traditional land etc..
This all happen because of the slackness of our authorities in enforcing the appropriate laws and removing them in the first place. Much appreciate the work of this police/men and women for taking action but CAN THIS BE A REGULAR EXECERCISE PLEASE. NCD is collecting a lot of tax payer monies from residents in Port Moresby and so should fund this program easily. Spending millions of Kina on Buai Ban is a lost cause, i mean seriously, just stop and think and look around you. I believe regulating and stopping illegal settlements can lessen most of the serious to petty crimes in our suburbs. IINACTION BY AUTHORITIES WILL ONLY SEE THE EXPANSION OF THIS SHANTY REALESTATES.

THOES PEOPLE ARE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEMS SO POLICE DEPARTMENT MUST PUT ON EYE 24/7 AND THIS WILL SOLVED THE PROBLEMS.

  • Population movement in PNG needs to be regulated and monitored. If I am from Mt Hagen and want to move to Lae or POM I must go to civil registry office, deregister there my name with reasons and motives for my move. As soon as I arrive in another place which is to be my new residency, the first thing to do is to go to he civil registry office to register my name, and if I move with my family then I also have to register my wife and children’s names.
I have been living in Europe, and moved within European cities for work, and this is how things are done here. You can’t just move to a new place if you have no work, no house and no good reason. You can’t just move to a different place and remain unregistered.
But what do we expect from our our Kanaka government and Kanaka mentality? We can’t even get the NID right on time. So many small things we need to do and fix before we get ourselves and the country organized in such a manner… So forget it….
It will be a never ending story…Police demolish one house here, they built he other house there.

  • Most are People from one particular region are doing this. This just won’t listen and obey. AROB is going in the right direction

  • Also in Lae, squatters settling along the Bumbu River’s Bank (Banana Block) must be forced out to leave this area. As this place is no customary land and as every year passes by, this unhabital place develops into a suburb. Thus, government must look forward to regain its land for the development and the betterment of this country.

  • That’s the way forward to minimize illegal activities, however how about such people living in 2mile and or Garden hills settlements? There are a lot of harassment and stealing caused by people living in above two settlement and yet nothing has been done by NCD members, yet giving them water supply and encouraging them to continue living there regardless of their actions. It is understood not everyone living in there are involved, but can NCDC do something to ensure these two settlements are free from accommodation the tags.

  • Why not remove 4mile and Garden hills? Real criminals reside in those areas. Prostitutes , well I don’t mind, but the two areas I listed are places where knives and offensive weapons are used. A prostitute sells her body but the thugs at Garden hills will take your life. I was once a victim and had to defend my life with no one to help me. Lucky to be alive today.
