Police raise concern over allowances

National

THE Police association is concerned that the Government may not pay allowances to the personnel engaged in the Covid-19 security operations.
Association president Lowa Tambua said police should be acknowledged by way of paying them allowances for helping the Government to contain a potential Covid-19 outbreak.
“It is a ‘slap on the face’ of all security agencies who have worked diligently and tirelessly to provide effective security during the state of emergency to contain this pandemic,” he said.
“You did not see a cabinet minister or any other political leader manning roadblocks, security check and doing border patrols.
“These security personnel did a marvellous job, hence, these allowances should be paid as it is dangerous for security forces to go on strike to demand what they legitimately deserve.
“Allowances such as travel allowances for officers deployed away from their substantive place of work deserve K200 a day as prescribed in the general order, no one can reduce or increase that.”
Tambua said for all police officers, the police association, Police Department and the state, through the Department of Personnel Management, had a legally binding agreement which was the enterprise base agreement (Clause 6) that sets out allowances for all police officers in any given callout.
He demanded that the allowances be paid promptly.

  • The Police Association must be very mindful that some of its rogue cops from the “FOX Unit” of NCD have conducted illegal raids to many residents within the entire Port Moresby city. In pretext of raiding liquor sales and betal nut, they stole money and other valuable properties worth millions of kina. Following illegal raids by your rogue cops, the Internal Investigation Unit of the Police Dept received a very large backlog of public complaints from the public only in Port Moresby alone during the COVID-19 SOE period. Many have pursued legal against the Police Department. Those implicated in the investigation shouldn’t be paid out as the State will lose million of kina for compensation.

  • Forget about paying allowances to police officers involved in operations within their own provinces because most took advantage of the Covid-19 SoE period and mistreated the innocent members who tried to make ends meet to feed their hungry families during the lock down. Police officers set up road blocks, demanding money from pmv drivers and crews with overload passengers for their own use. assaulting innocent people, raiding liquor shops, destroying markets, confiscating touch screen mobile phones, confiscating betel nuts and gave to their wives to sell in the barracks etc. I think they already had their share of their free allowances from the public.

  • Delay processing of deployment allowances and fast track investigations into the misuse, abuse, brutality cases filed against all police.

Than pay/ compensate genuine cases out of the allowance funds.

In this way hopefully future police brutality and abuse could be minimised.
All will know that if a small faction ef’s up all would affected.
