ACTING Deputy Police Commissioner, Operations, Donald Yamasombi says the constabulary stands ready to support any precautionary measures taken against the coronavirus threat.
His officers have been directed to discuss with enforcement agencies such as the Health Department, National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority (Naqia), PNG Customs and Immigrations how to monitor the situation and protect the entry and exit points.
DCP Yamasombi said in a statement police would help in ensuring precautionary measures were followed by members of the public, especially the processes, procedures and certifications.
He said entries should be cleared by authorities especially the Health Department.
He also warned people not to publish on social media “fake news” about the coronavirus.
Naqia managing director Joel Alu said they would deal with pest and diseases originating from animals and plants.
He said the coronavirus was a “health” issue and was the responsibility of the Health Department.
He was responding to Immigration Minister Westly Nukundj who said the authority should set up temperature monitoring detectors at Jackson airport to detect arriving passengers having high fever.
“Any disease related to human health is the responsibility of the Health Department.
Naqia (will) manage the borders (airports, wharves and post offices) with our sister agencies. We will however collaborate with our partner agencies in this regard,” Alu said.
