POLICE and hospital workers in Lae recovered the body of a man from the famous Raun Wara (lake) in the heart of Lae city on Monday.
Lae Met Supt Anthony Wagambie Jr said the body was found floating in the lake opposite the Lae Show Ground.
“The body was spotted by people who were passing through and reported to police,” Wagambie said.
“Police attended to the scene and retrieved the body.
“From initial observation of the body, there were no apparent wounds found.
“It appears that the body was in the water for a couple of days before it surfaced,” he said.
Police said the man, in his 20s, was from Sinasina in Chimbu and lived at Kapiak Street along Boundary Road.
Police are yet to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
Wagambie said according to initial reports received by police personnel at the scene, the man was with another man before his death.
“We call on witnesses who may have been in the area when this incident happened to come forward to police so that investigators can piece together the case,” Wagambie said.
“Police investigators are also looking for the man the deceased was believed to be with.”
Some residents in the city have nicknamed the lake the “death lake”.
A number of dead bodies have been found there over the years.
