NATIONAL Capital District police have urged residents to report any vehicle or person who is seen using children to beg for money or food in the city, especially along roads at traffic lights.
Met Supt Perou N’dranou said police did not have enough manpower and resources to continuously monitor the areas every day as there were other serious crimes happening in the city that they needed to prioritise.
N’dranou said a person, or a group of people, using children to beg for money for their benefit was wrong and residents who saw this should report the matter to police.
He said officers were instructed to remove vendors and any vagrants at road sides harassing, soliciting and accosting motorists.
“We have stopped vendors from selling things in public areas, at road sides in Boroko, along traffic lights and will continue to do so,” N’dranou said.
He said the CCTV cameras would assist police to keep surveillance on busy public areas and monitor crime hot spots.
He said police would continue to monitor the streets and common areas like Boroko, Gordon, and along roadsides near traffic lights especially, at Holiday Inn, Vision City and North Waigani to allow the flow of traffic.
