POLICE are appealing for public assistance to identify those responsible for the death of a student in Madang two weeks ago.

Grade 8 student Philip Ravai died when a protest by students developed into a riot in Madang town.

He was a student at Kusbau Primary School. People from Ward Seven in the Madang urban local level government have presented a petition to the Madang provincial government and police seeking among other things to have an independent police team investigate the matter.

This is because they suspect that he was shot by a police officer.

It is believed that a police team from Port Moresby will investigate the killing.  Provincial police commander Sylvester Kalaut is calling on people who witnessed the fight in town to come forward with any information they have. Police station commander Ben Neneho said it was yet to be established who shot the student.

Councillor Bonny Solomon said they asked instigators of the protest to be identified so they could meet repatriation and funeral expenses.
