POLICE entered Gabi village in Port Moresby yesterday and confiscated more than 20 bags of betel nuts.
Police, in a statement, said they confiscated the betel nuts despite resistance from the villagers.
“Four police vehicles from the NCD Fox and Dog units were pelted with missiles and confronted by angry villagers,” a police report said.
Despite the tense situation, the officers were able to raid houses and confiscate the betel nuts which has been banned from being brought into the city and sold.
Police said the nuts were then scattered on the road at the June Valley/Hanuabada intersection on Koura Way and crushed by a truck.
Police said the betel nut trade remained the biggest threat to the NCD and Central communities during the state of emergency because of the Covid-19 threat.
